Top Five Ways To Save on Travel Expenses

Top Five Ways To Save on Travel Expenses

As you make plans for your next travel adventure, take some time to think about ways you can maximize your dollar. There are things that we all would love to do, but sometimes finances can come between our dreams and our reality. Let me share with you some of the money saving tips I've learned along the way in my journeys...
I am a very budget conscious person, but I also enjoy visiting other parts of the world, and don't want to have to save for five years in order to take a two week trip! There are a lot of ways that travel can be made more affordable, and I am going to tell you some of the secrets that will work for you too!

-Stay off the beaten path. Just straying a few miles from the center of the destination you are visiting can save you quite a bit in your lodging expenses.

-Chose lodging that includes a kitchen. Cooking your own meals will save you a huge sum of money. You can still shop at local markets, and enjoy the local foods, but cooking them yourself will definitely save your pocketbook. Another option is to pick up a prepared meal at a grocery store and enjoy your dinner at the beach, or at a scenic overlook.

-Avoid peak season travel to have significant savings on accommodations, car rentals and airfare. Not only that, but you can avoid the crowds. I usually plan my trips before Memorial Day, or after Labor Day...when most schools are still in session.

-Also check with the chamber of commerce at your destination for local events or holidays that could make your trip more expensive. For example, you wouldn't want to plan a trip to Louisville, Kentucky the first week of May, unless of course you are planning on attending the Kentucky Derby.

-Be flexible with your travel dates. Airfares tend to be less expensive Tuesday through Thursday...but staying over a weekend can also bring the cost down.

-Check for local fairs and/or free concerts at local parks. Most towns have some local activities that are cheap or free. What a great way to relax and get the feel of the community you are visiting!

So, be a saavy traveler. Do some research on the destination you are choosing, and shop around. There are a lot of deals to be had out there, if you take the time to shop and compare. There are also "deals" that aren't so great a deal. So look around, and find out what is right for you.

See you on the road!
